We each took a couple of minutes yesterday and came up with a victim character that we would base the events of the narrative around if it was our own choice. These character sketches could include anything relevant: social, emotional, physical, psychological, intellectual or something to do with the events they are involved in. The ensemble then discussed each character in regard to what implications this has for the following:
the other characters (bystander, victim, parents, teachers, etc)
the narrative
demonising the bully
victim blaming
empowering the bystander to act
Nick's Victim
This is a break down of the character that I discussed:
male
unpopular: why?
what makes him unpopular?
what makes people unpopular?
unpopular with who?
Doesn't engage in risk taking or self destructive behavior
Tall poppy syndrome
doesn't belong because he doesn't fit the criteria
too smart
doesn't play right sport
difficulty in making friends
style is wrong or too extreme
Single parent family: doesn't receive much support from that single parent
non-confrontational
reserved
lonely
introvert: finds it difficult to reach out to people and make friends
bullied: both cyber and normal
kind
considerate
empathetic
low self esteem
Low self worth or value
Search for who he is and where he belongs: is this a common theme for adolescents
